Job Description

The Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) School of Architecture (SoA) is inviting applications for an urban planning and/or urban policy professional to teach a graduate seminar on urban planning and public policy. The candidate should have at least 10 years of professional experience preferably in government.

The seminar, ARC 48742- PLANNING AND PUBLIC POLICY FOR THE FUTURE OF URBANISM, is a required course in our Master of Urban Design program. It addresses the connection between policy, planning, and the redesigning of cities.

School Description

The School of Architecture is one of five schools, alongside the Schools of Art, Design, Drama and Music in the College of Fine Arts. The School offers two Bachelors programs (BA and B.Arch), seven Masters programs including the professional Master of Architecture, and four doctoral programs. Our student body totals over 400 undergraduate and graduate students. Carnegie Mellon University is classified as an "R1: Doctoral University – Highest Research Activity" institution. As such, a wide range of transdisciplinary educational and research opportunities are supported at the school, college and/or university.

Our school's philosophy is to provide deep immersion in the discipline of architecture, expanded by a university culture of interdisciplinarity and creative inquiry. Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs prepare students to be excellent, discipline-defining design-thinkers in diverse global contexts. We believe that architectural excellence demands both rigorous training in fundamentals and the development of unique expertise - whether the sciences, the humanities, engineering, or computation. Though each of our students graduate with intensive architecture knowledge, no two graduates leave with the same education.

Our programs take advantage of:

  • Our position within one of the world's leading research and entrepreneurship institutions at the interdisciplinary intersection of technology, the arts, and the humanities;

  • Specialized facilities and centers like the Robert L. Preger Intelligent Workplace, dFAB Lab, Code Lab, Remaking Cities Institute, and the IDeATe Physical Computing Lab;

  • The context of our dynamic, post-industrial city of Pittsburgh as a place for inquiry and engagement.
