Ministry to Seafarers
Chaplain

Mission: Meeting the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of all international seafarers and the local SeaPort Manatee Community.

Role in the Organization: The Chaplain is primarily responsible for carrying out The Anchor House mission statement, which is to ensure the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the SeaPort Community are met. The Chaplain reports directly to the Executive Director and indirectly to the Board of Directors.

Position Type: Full time, salary.

Compensation: $45,000-$55,000 salary range with flexible options for stipends/allowances for benefits.

Key Responsibilities and Expectations,

Chaplain:

• Ensure that all foreign crewed vessels calling at SeaPort Manatee are visited in a timely manner after arrival to assess the needs of the vessel and appraise its Captain and crew of the full range of services offered by Anchor House.

• Compile and maintain reports of each visit to gather data on the needs of seafarers

• Prioritize the needs of those vessels calling the Port such that those seafarers with reduced access to port welfare services are prioritized and served in a timely manner based upon the vessel’s anticipated time in port.

• Arrange or provide worship activities onboard or ashore as desired by seafarers or the Port community

• Facilitate communications between seafarers and their families or others as necessary

• Serve as Chaplain and Counselor to those visiting and working at the Port while understanding the diversity of those onboard visiting ships.

• Operate a 14 passenger van while transporting center visitors within the port and to local destinations.

• Foster positive relationships with seafarers, volunteers and the port community to support and further the mission of Anchor House.

• Ensure that appropriate and meaningful Christian materials are available to Seafarers and the Port community at Anchor House, onboard ships and by any other relevant and necessary avenues.

• Attend meetings of the Board of Directors for presentation of reports for their areas of responsibility

• Carry out other tasks within and outside of the physical Mission building as directed from time to time by the Executive Director.

• Train and mentor volunteers to maximize retention as well as promote positive community outreach on behalf of Anchor House.

• Schedule volunteers to assist in the tasks of the Chaplain including ship visitation, seafarer outreach and seafarer services.

• Assist the Executive Director in community outreach and volunteer recruitment activities

• Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director in accordance with the mission of Anchor House

Training Requirements

• Complete assigned online training courses provided by MARE and NAMMA for ship visitors

• Continuing education as required by the Board of Directors or Executive Director

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Minimum of Bachelor's degree, preferably in a religious field, social work or similar.

• Prior experience with non-profits or ministries preferred.

• Practice exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills.

• Display commitment to the mission of Anchor House and the Christian faith.

• Display a passion to minister to others from a Biblical worldview.

• Ability to develop staff and volunteers maximizing their strengths and interests.

• Ability to work independently and as a team leader.

• Ability to board ships at the port on sometimes steep gangways to meet with crew members.

• Advanced computer user and social media skills.

• Valid driver’s license.

• Ability to secure transportation workers identification card
