Under the general direction of the Staff Services Manager II, in the Human Resources Office’s Classification & Selection (C&S) Branch, the Office Technician (OT) is responsible for providing day-to-day administrative, clerical, and office support related to the coordination of training and sensitive and personnel management projects for management in the C&S Branch. The incumbent serves as the first point of contact in assisting Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) employees with inquiries related to training enrollment and assisting managers and supervisors with general inquiries regarding C&S personnel matters.

The Office Technician (Typing) works 40 hours per week in a building with artificial light and temperature control. There is free parking. The incumbent must be able to remain in a stationary position and upright position for long periods of time.  The incumbent in this position has frequent contact with DIR staff, representatives from other state agencies, and the public in person, by telephone, and/or email. Contact is of a sensitive and confidential nature.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) the ability to type at a minimum speed as designated on the Class Specifications (link available in the additional documentation section). You must obtain a valid typing certificate confirming your ability to meet the minimum typing speed, prior to being hired. Additional information regarding acceptable typing tests is available at the CalCareers.ca.gov website.

Typing Certificate – 40 WPM (words per minute) issued within the last four (4) years and certified from a five (5) minute typing test.

The ability to use a personal computer and telephone is essential. The position requires the ability to operate a facsimile machine, photocopier, and other office equipment.

The incumbent must possess knowledge of the following:  Proper usage and application of grammar and spelling; apply office policies and procedures; and working knowledge of commonly used office automation/computer programs.
