Job Summary:
Public Safety Technicians are uniformed, non-sworn employees of the Police Department. Duties include assisting citizens, investigating incidents such as lost/found property, non-injury traffic accidents, misdemeanor thefts, and working at the Front Desk of the Police Department. The incumbent is responsible for enforcing municipal ordinances on a limited basis, generating reports, documenting actions and taking phone reports; assisting the department by directing traffic when necessary; transporting vehicles for repair; assisting with school crossing guard duties; working with community and neighborhood groups; and transporting dispatch tapes. The incumbent must be able to write clear, concise, and accurate reports, and have excellent communication and customer service skills in dealing with citizens, business owners, vendors, and coworkers. The incumbent may be required to testify in court. The incumbent will assist with the recovery of video surveillance for criminal investigations from a number of different recording systems. The incumbent will assist with runaway juvenile investigations, unattended death investigations, and DHS and APS referrals.
The position requires working four, 10-hour shifts (with three days off); working either a day or evening shift; and being available to work weekends and holidays. Shift may start as early as 7:00 a.m. or end as late as 11:00 p.m. May be called in for major case investigations outside of normal work hours.
TESTING: Selected applicants will be required to take a polygraph and thorough background investigation prior to employment.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must be 21 years of age by date of hire.
Must possess a valid driver's license as well as a good driving record.
1-3 years' recent experience working with the public especially in difficult situations.
Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.
Spanish/English bilingual speaking skills highly desired.
Essential Functions:

Communicate in a face-to-face, one-to-one setting, using a telephone or in a group setting.
Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
Produce written material with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentences, punctuation and grammar.
Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or keyboard.
Learn job related material through verbal instruction, observation, lectures, and/or reading.
Work with a wide variety of recording equipment.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Frequent contact with the public sometimes facing adverse situations with citizens.
Work schedule includes evenings, shifts, holidays, and weekends.
Required to drive a City vehicle in all weather conditions.
Exposure to all weather conditions.
Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously (e.g., operate a motor vehicle).
Communication skills enough to convey information verbally and in writing.
Must be able to hear and speak on the radio and telephone.
Must be able to lift and carry at least 40 pounds.
