Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:

JOB SUMMARY: The Instructor of Music position is a versatile, full-time teaching position with responsibilities of 12 credit hours each semester. Responsibilities may include any of the following: Teach weekly private lessons to music majors/minors on instruments, Teach MUSI 1306: Music Appreciation and/or MUSI 1315: Fine Arts in Daily Living, Conduct the TSU Wind Ensemble and other instrumental ensembles offered, and Fulfill any additional instructional needs of the department each semester.

The instructor reports to the Chair of the music department and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences and is responsible for supporting and advancing the mission and goals of the university, college, and department in all academic, scholarly and student support activities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Instrumental conducting and pedagogical expertise. Essential Duties Summary:

Applied Studio

  • Prepare for weekly applied instruction for all music majors and minors within the studio
  • Provide ongoing feedback to students through grading rubrics and responding to students via email in a timely manner
  • Prepare and rehearse repertoire for weekly group sessions with students in the studio or instrument area
General Education Courses
  • Plan weekly lessons based on learning outcomes for all courses
  • Implement weekly lesson plans using a variety of research based instructional strategies and student engagement techniques
  • Evaluate student learning through informal and formal assessment practices
  • Provide ongoing feedback to students through grading of tasks and assessments and responding to students via email in a timely manner
  • Facilitate collaborative learning opportunities for all students in the course
  • Adapt learning materials each semester to address student needs and interest
  • Collaborate with colleagues; specifically, those teaching the same course
Conducting Instrumental Ensemble(s)
  • Select repertoire for each academic year for various performances, both on and off campus
  • Prepare and direct weekly rehearsals, including sectionals and whole group instruction
  • Evaluate student learning through informal and formal assessment practices effective in ensemble rehearsals
  • Assist in recruiting and auditioning student musicians for instrumental ensembles
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Attend required trainings and/or meetings related to teaching and learning or administrative responsibilities
  • Be available for students during office hours equal to 8 hours per week
  • Perform other tasks related to teaching in the music department

Hiring Range:

$40,985.00 - $52,980.00

Education:

A Master’s degree in music education, instrumental conducting, or performance.

A Doctorate degree in music education with an emphasis in instrumental conducting preferred. Required Licensing/Certification:

Conducting instrumental ensembles and music teaching at the secondary and post-secondary level.
