Job Description

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Indiana is seeking a full-time justice director who will oversee NAMI Indiana's justice and diversion programs. People living with a mental health condition are over represented in the criminal justice system. This fact is why NAMI Indiana works to divert people away from the justice system and into treatment. As justice director, this position will support these efforts through training, education, and technical support to communities around the state.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties: 

  • Statewide Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT), Sequential Intercept Model (SIM):
    1. Provides technical assistance to Indiana communities in developing a CIT program or holding a SIM mapping workshop
    2. Helps interested citizens and professionals identify relevant stakeholders 
    3. Attends meetings and trainings to guide local committees to develop their program or workshop
    4. Develops and maintains SIM community reports and resource toolkit for local CIT coalitions
  • Gives presentations at conferences and meetings about CIT, SIM, NAMI Indiana diversion efforts, or other relevant topics.
  • Provide mental health and criminal justice presentations/continuing education for criminal justice professionals, mental health providers, and community leaders.
  • Stays abreast of current best practices in mental health policing, criminal justice diversion, and mental health crisis response.
  • Maintains public-facing web page with information about NAMI Indiana’s justice programs and available training. 
  • Planning annual Mental Health and Criminal Justice Summit, with support from event staff.
  • Represents NAMI Indiana and advocates on behalf of people impacted by mental illness at state-level stakeholder meetings to implement systems change.
  • Coordinate with the NAMI Indiana executive director regarding legislation impacting individuals with mental illness in the criminal justice system.
  • Serve as NAMI Indiana’s liaison to criminal justice agencies, the national NAMI justice and policy team, and local NAMI affiliates.
  • Grant management and reporting.

Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, or a related field
  • 3-5 years professional experience involving justice involved individuals impacted by mental illness
  • Strong public speaking skills, including comfort speaking to large groups of people
  • Has a valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and willing to travel for meetings and trainings throughout the state as needed, and occasional travel outside of the state
  • Respectful of people affected by mental health conditions
  • Attention to detail and prompt follow through
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Must pass background check

  • Familiarity with NAMI mission and programs 
  • Justice System Experience
  • Familiarity with CIT, SIM, or other diversion programs
  • Trained in active listening skills, suicide prevention trainer, trauma awareness trainer

This position has a salary of $50,000 and is hybrid. NAMI Indiana full-time employee benefits include health, dental, and vision, accountable PTO and holiday schedule, employee assistance program, and 401k match.
