A national human rights organization is seeking a Lead Counsel to join their team in New York City. The preference for the position is hybrid in New York City, NY (on site twice weekly). The organization will consider remote candidates with a strong preference for Atlanta, GA or San Francisco, CA (listed in order of preference). Other remote locations also may be considered. Remote candidates will be required to travel to New York City once per quarter.
The salary range is from $145K to $170K with an excellent benefits package the includes generous paid time off, low-cost medical insurance and a 401k with employer match. Primary Duties: The Lead Counsel will help ensure that the organization is employing a racial justice lens in all current and new legal work and develop and advance litigation strategies to prevent the unnecessary removal of Black children from their families. Additional duties include:Plays a management and supervisory role within the organizations program structure for investigating, litigating and monitoring civil rights legal campaigns under the leadership of the Chief Program Officer.
A member of the organizations Executive Leadership Team and helps shape the organizations strategic priorities and overall direction.
Reflects and promotes the high value the organization places on staff growth and development, mentoring, collaboration, consultation and transparency.
Assists in the identification and development of funding sources and is expected to develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders both in litigation jurisdictions and in advocacy spaces.
Requirements :
Ten years of experience in federal civil rights litigation or comparable experience, including knowledge of procedural and substantive law relating to class actions.
Leadership experience in a civil rights, public interest, or legal services organization is a plus.
Knowledge of childrens issues or social services systems is also a plus.
Demonstrated commitment to racial justice issues and ability to bring a racial justice lens to the platform.
Demonstrated leadership skills, including effectively inspiring and leading teams and ensuring strong internal communication and coordination, and ensuring and promoting individual and team-wide accountability for the work.
Significant experience in, and comfort with, supervising, mentoring, and developing legal staff.
Ability to develop new legal theories and extend existing precedent in creative ways.
Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with diverse partners and allies, including non-profit advocacy groups, key local advocates, local private law firms, pro bono counsel from national law firms and impacted youth and families.
