In this role you will work with experienced systems analysts in performing Midrange Linux/Unix computing applications and systems administration support and with senior analysts in the configuration, testing, installation, and maintenance of midrange Linux/Unix computer systems and related peripheral components following established procedures. In addition, you will perform installation and maintenance of Linux/Unix server operating systems and server hardware installations and configurations and will work on assigned projects using hardware and software systems including RS6000, Sun, HP servers, AIX, Solaris, Linux, application and database server software, Web server software and MS Office products, Windows Server operating systems, and agency desktops, laptops, and other user devices. Essential Functions

35% Under immediate supervision, serves as a Midrange Unix/Linux Specialist for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT):

  • Works with experienced systems analysts in performing Midrange Linux/Unix computing applications and systems administration support.
  • Assists with systems administration of Linux/Unix systems.
  • Assists with software installation, programming scripts, procedures, and programs.
  • Assists with the testing, implementation, documentation, and maintenance of Linux/Unix server systems including diagnostic testing of various hardware/software components.
  • Implements required fixes to correct problems defined during diagnostics.
  • Documents problems and corrective action through Change Management systems/process.
  • Performs routine maintenance, health and performance monitoring on server hardware.
  • Completes professional assignments of limited scope.

20% Works with senior analysts in the configuration, testing, installation, and maintenance of midrange Linux/Unix computer systems and related peripheral components following established procedures:

  • Assists in ensuring configurations comply with agency security considerations, performance requirements, and established standards.

20% Performs installation and maintenance of Linux/Unix server operating systems and server hardware installations and configurations:

  • Assists with the maintenance and server operating system patches and fix packs.
  • Assists with providing support for server functions, including configuration, installation and support of AIX, Linux, Web Servers, FTP, Antivirus and other systems utilities.

10% Works on assigned projects using hardware and software systems including AIX, Linux, application and database server software, Web server software and MS Office products, Windows Server operating systems, and agency desktops, laptops, and other user devices.

10% Keeps abreast of new developments in the Information Technology (IT) field:

  • Continues education by attending meetings, training sessions, seminars, and conferences to increase familiarity with and remain current on products, vendors, techniques, and procedures.
  • Attends demonstrations and exhibitions related to assigned operations

5% Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college with coursework in computer science, system services, or directly related fields. OR
  • Requires satisfactory completion of an agency sponsored training program.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

  • Elementary knowledge of network communication concepts and principles, including client/server network configurations, routers, network protocols, switches, firewalls, VPN, and Internet. 
  • Elementary knowledge in computer programming and/or scripting such as C shells, Bourne shells, and Perl scripts. 
  • Elementary knowledge of hardware/software support of Unix/Linux servers including installation, configuration, and administration
  • Elementary knowledge of support of application server, database server, and Web server functions including installation, configuration, and administration.
