The Longwood Collective Area Planning Department is seeking a talented and motivated Urban Planner/Designer. The candidate would join a department of eight planners responsible for planning in Longwood’s Medical and Academic Area and serving our 22 members institutions including several of the nation’s top medical institutions, one of Boston’s most revered museums, Harvard Medical School, Dental School and School of Public Health, the five Colleges of the Fenway, the largest Reform temple in New England, cutting-edge medical research organizations and a distinguished private high school.
Longwood is one of Boston’s busiest and most dynamic neighborhoods and an epicenter of innovation, culture, education, and healthcare. This is an outstanding opportunity for a hands-on planner to lead our nationally recognized placemaking program, Outside //, planning and designing privately-owned publicly accessible open spaces, managing district ambassadors and multiple program vendors. The role would also provide technical support in areas such as GIS, data analysis, sustainability and open space.

Core Responsibilities: Outside// Program Management Serve as the program manager for the Longwood district placemaking program, Outside//, a seasonal program across multiple sites in partnership with member institutions.
- Responsibilities include:
- Coordinating with sponsoring institutional partners, including developing the annual scope and budget with the Area Planning Vice President, providing updates on a bi-monthly basis, coordinating programmatic needs with on-the-ground facilities employees, and responding promptly to members regarding special requests and concerns.
- Managing budget including gathering cost proposals from vendors, proposing a budget to internal staff and to sponsoring members, overseeing large purchases, and tracking spending.
- Overseeing the Outside Ambassadors including a team of four (4).
- Program management with vendors for activities including music, fitness, food trucks, book carts, dog petting, and public art.
- Communications and Promotion with the Communications Department, develop and guide the promotion of the placemaking program.
- Measuring performance , including analyzing data gathered by site ambassadors, tracking program numbers, and conducting an annual survey of program participants.
- Strategizing opportunities for new sites and donor partnerships.
GIS Lead - Leading the division’s GIS mapping efforts for initiatives such as projected area-wide development, transportation, open space, infrastructure, asset management, and patient and employee counts by MA political districts.
- Periodically updating aerial photography and base maps
- Maintaining the department’s GIS data library and project folder organization.
- Support Department in creation of graphics and data that tell the Longwood story.
Required Qualifications: - Minimum four years relevant experience and bachelor’s degree in urban planning or related field. A master’s degree in planning or a related field may supplement two years of experience.
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and Microsoft Office. Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign preferred.
- Ability to produce clear and concise maps, diagrams, and graphics.
- Excellent analytical, presentation, communication, time management, and organizational skills.
- Patience/flexibility to meet demands of a changing environment, while working independently and as part of a team including projects outside the core responsibilities listed above.
- Ability to handle situations, issues and information with sound judgement, diplomacy, and sensitivity.
