Role Overview
:

You will serve to act in “responsible charge” for the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center. You may have daily to occasional contact with IDOC crews to direct work assignments. Work is performed inside and outside on 800 acres of grounds with an excess of sixty-five buildings and structures to be maintained. Exposure to hazardous conditions i.e. fumes, asbestos, hot pipes, vapors, insects, rodents, chemicals, grease, electric shock, powered machinery, heights, crawl spaces, tunnels, deep ditches, and inclement weather is common. Safety goggles, safety shoes, hardhats, ear protection, gloves, welding helmet/gloves, face mask, and cold weather clothes are required to perform some duties due to possible injury from hazardous conditions. Work is performed in a simulated urban warfare training environment. You may be expected to participate as a component of the simulated urban warfare, terrorist, or homeland security training operations.


Salary Statement
:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $37,648.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.


A Day in the Life:

The essential elements of the job duties:

  • Operate the water treatment plant including the operation of pumps, pipes, and valves.
  • Conduct daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual testing on raw and treated water in accordance with appropriate Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) regulations.
  • Determine and applies the appropriate chemicals used to treat water.
  • Make process control or system integrity decisions about water quality or quantity that affect the health of the population served.
  • Maintain the records of testing results, valves and hydrant locations, distribution system maps, maintenance logs, and completes various reports as required by IDEM.
  • Perform checks, preventive maintenance, and repairs of pumps, pipes, valves, and equipment.
  • Develop an emergency or contingency plan for natural and human-induced disasters.
  • Issue public notices when contaminate levels or water samples exceed maximum levels.
  • Flush and perform maintenance facility water hydrants semi-annually.
  • Must comply with the continuing education renewal requirements for the waste treatment certification.
  • Assist in building maintenance throughout the training site to include minor and emergency repairs of plumbing, electrical, etc.
  • Comply with all appropriate protective and safety requirements in the performance of duties including, but not limited to use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); handling, storage and mixing of hazardous materials according to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS); confined spaces; and complying with safety requirements in the use of tools, equipment, etc.;
  • Perform grounds maintenance work including, but not limited to mowing, trimming, fertilizing, leaf removal, trash pick-up, snow and ice removal, and minor repair of parking areas, roads, and walks.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Must have a GED or High School Diploma with the educational skills necessary to make simple computations with fractions and decimals; read a linear scale; calculate volumes of simple shapes; and make simple computations of multiplication and division.
  • Must have or able to obtain an IDEM Grade WT 4 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification and Grade DSM Water Distribution System Operator Certification.
  • Ability to interpret service manuals and work orders and submit written reports.
  • Considerable understanding of the basic principles of science and sanitation.
  • Ability to make decisions regarding the daily operational activities.
  • Ability to interpret chemical and bacteriological sample reports.
  • Ability to perform and interpret a variety of laboratory tests and to adjust equipment as needed.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
